English Name: Blackening Chanterelle (Chanterelle and girolle family).
French Name: Chanterelle noircissante (='blackening chanterelle').
5 Key Characters:
- dirty yellow cap, sometimes with traces of lilac.
- gills irregular, yellow greyish violet and blackening.
- mushroom goes entirely black with age or where damaged.
- yellow stalk.
- supposedly smells like mirabelle plums.
Lookalikes: Craterellus ianthinoxanthus and C. tubaeformis, neither of which blacken.
Habitat: On the ground, in forests.
Fruiting Period: August-September-October-November.
