Bog Pimpernel - Anagallis tenella



Scientific Name: Anagallis tenella (Primulaceae).

English Name: Bog Pimpernel (Primrose family).

French Name: Le Mouron délicat.

5 Key Characters:
  • small creeping plant.
  • white flowers with crimson veins (so the flowers look pink).
  • leaves nearly round, in pairs along the stems.
  • a plant of damp places.
  • flowers 5 lobed ('petalled') funnel shaped.
Lookalikes: Lesser Water Plantain Baldellia ranunculoides grows in similar places and has small pink flowers, but they are 3 petalled and cup shaped.

Habitat: Full sun, favouring damp places rich in organic matter. Marshes, peaty soils around springs and seepages, as well as boggy meadows and open areas of damp heath. The preferred habitat is fragile, very specific or ephemeral.

Flowering Period: May-June-July-August-September.

Status: Rare in Indre-et-Loire, uncommon in the Brenne.
