Butchers Broom - Ruscus aculeatus



Scientific Name: Ruscus aculeatus.

English Name: Butchers Broom.

French Name: Le Fragon faux houx or Fragon épineux or Petit-houx.

  • 'leaves' are actually flattened stems.
  • 'leaves' oval, tough, evergreen, spine tipped.
  • flowers insignificant.
  • red berries 1 cm across.

Habitat: Dry woods on neutral or acidic soil.

Flowering Period: January-April.

Status: Uncommon and local, but a conspicuous species where it occurs.
