Black Pea - Lathyrus niger



Scientific Name: Lathyrus niger.

English Name: Black Pea.

French Name: La Gesse noircissante or la Gesse noire.

5 Key Characters:
  • non-climbing, without tendrils.
  • violet purple flowers which turn blue with age, in clusters of 2 - 10.
  • stems angled.
  • oval or elliptical finely pointed leaflets in 3 - 6 pairs.
  • plant goes black when dry.
Lookalikes: Other legumes.

Habitat: Open woods, often on calcareous soil.

Flowering Period: May-June-July.

Status: Uncommon but can be easily spotted where it does occur.
