Black Bryony - Tamus communis


Scientific Name: Tamus communis.

English Name: Black Bryony.

French Name: Tamier.

5 Key Characters:
  • veins on leaves form a net pattern.
  • flowers insignificant.
  • leaves very glossy and heart shaped.
  • berries red and poisonous.
  • climber, twining clockwise, but without tendrils.
Lookalikes: White Bryony Bryonia dioica, which has palmate lobed leaves and tendrils.

Habitat: Open woods, scrub, hedgebanks, on richer neutral, acidic or calcareous soil.

Flowering Period: May-June-July.

Status: Fairly common and can be a conspicuous species of woodland here. The new shoots are edible and were once gathered for the pot.
