Brimstone - Gonepteryx rhamni



Scientific Name: Gonepteryx rhamni.

English Name: Brimstone.

French Name: Le Citron

5 Key Characters:
  • males yellow, females greeny white.
  • pointed wings unique in this area.
  • orange spot in the middle of each wing.
  • can be seen very early in the year (February).
  • over winters as an adult, sheltering in ivy.

Lookalikes: Clouded Yellow Colias crocea, which has black edged wings and does not have pointed wings.

Habitat: Lowland woodland edges, clearings and rides, open woodland, wooded grassland, undergrowth.

Flight Period: February-March-April-May-June-July-August-September-October-November.

Status: Very common.

Caterpillar: Green, May-June.

Host Plant: Buckthorn Rhamnus cathartica.
