Pondweeds are fresh water plants. Some of the species are not easy to distinguish from one another and involve some fiddly dissection of the junction between leaf and stem. Individual plants within the same species can vary considerably in appearance from one another and they also hybridise. It is useful to note if there are submerged leaves or not. They will grow in both still and slowly moving water.
Below, probably the most common and easy to recognise species, Broad Leaved Pondweed Potamogeton natans, growing in the étang (fishpond) behind the Maison du Parc in the Brenne, photographed in June. The leaves of this species are a slightly elongated heart shape.
